Gum health

Bleeding gums are not normal, and they are not a reason to brush less. Gingivitis is inflammation caused by plaque sitting along the gumline, and at this stage it is fully reversible. Left alone for months to years it can progress to periodontitis, which is not.

Signs to look for

  • Pink in the sink when brushing or flossing
  • Puffy, red, or tender gum margins
  • Gums that look like they are pulling back
  • Persistent bad taste or breath

Common causes

  • Plaque and tartar at the gumline
  • Skipping interdental cleaning
  • Smoking and vaping
  • Hormonal changes, diabetes, and certain medications
The routine

What actually works.

01

Clean the gumline, not just the teeth

Angle the brush 45° into the gumline. That margin is where inflammation starts.

02

Floss or use interdental brushes daily

A brush cannot reach between teeth. This single habit resolves most mild gingivitis.

03

Add an antibacterial rinse

Use it at a separate time from brushing so it does not wash away your paste's active ingredients.

Common questions

Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?+

No. Bleeding usually settles within 7–10 days of consistent, gentle cleaning. If it does not, see a dentist.

Is bleeding always gingivitis?+

Usually, but it can also come from new flossing, medication, or pregnancy. Persistent bleeding deserves a professional look.
