Cavity prevention

Cavities are the end of a long process: bacteria metabolize sugar, produce acid, and pull minerals out of enamel. Early demineralization looks like a chalky white spot and can still be reversed. Once the surface collapses into a hole, only a dentist can repair it.

Signs to look for

  • Chalky white or brown spots on enamel
  • Sensitivity to sweets in one specific spot
  • Food consistently catching between the same teeth

Common causes

  • Frequent snacking and sipping sugary drinks
  • Dry mouth from medication or mouth breathing
  • Deep grooves in molars that trap plaque
  • Inconsistent nighttime brushing
The routine

What actually works.

01

Choose a remineralizing agent

Fluoride and hydroxyapatite both rebuild early lesions. Pick one and use it twice daily without rinsing afterward.

02

Reduce acid frequency, not just amount

Six sips of soda across a day is worse than one glass. Every exposure restarts a 20-minute acid attack.

03

Chew xylitol after meals

It starves the bacteria that cause decay and stimulates protective saliva.

Common questions

Can a cavity heal itself?+

Early demineralization can remineralize. An actual hole in the enamel cannot — that needs a filling.

Should I rinse after brushing?+

No. Spit, don't rinse. Leaving the paste film on your teeth extends the remineralizing effect.
