Nano vs. micro hydroxyapatite

Particle size is the difference between repair and polish. Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) particles are in the 20–80 nanometre range — comparable to the mineral crystallites in natural enamel — so they seat inside surface defects and plug open dentinal tubules. Micro-HA is far larger; it deposits a mineral layer and buffs stain, but it cannot enter the structures that cause cold sensitivity. If a label just says "hydroxyapatite," it is usually micro.

Hydroxyapatite has been approved as an anti-caries agent in Japan since 1993 and is regulated in the US as a cosmetic ingredient.
