Kids' oral health

Baby teeth matter: they hold space for adult teeth and set lifelong habits. The highest-risk window is when the first permanent molars erupt around age six, before children have the dexterity to clean them well on their own.

Signs to look for

  • White spots along the gumline of front teeth
  • Complaints of pain with sweets
  • Refusing to brush or rushing through it

Common causes

  • Bottles or sippy cups with juice at bedtime
  • Frequent snacking on sticky carbohydrates
  • Brushing unsupervised before age 7–8
  • Deep grooves in newly erupted molars
The routine

What actually works.

01

Supervise until about age eight

Let them start, then you finish. Fine motor control for effective brushing isn't there yet.

02

Match the paste to the age

A rice-grain smear under three, a pea-sized amount after. Choose a flavor they will not fight.

03

Make it a fixed two minutes

A song, a timer, or a brush with a built-in one. Consistency beats intensity at this age.

Common questions

When should the first dental visit happen?+

By the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing.

Are sealants worth it?+

Yes — sealing the grooves of permanent molars cuts decay risk in those teeth dramatically.
